Cold Outreach

Cold outreach is contacting a prospect who has had no prior relationship or interaction with the sender. typically via cold email, cold DM, or cold call.

Cold outreach is any direct contact attempt where the recipient has never engaged with the sender's content, brand, or previous outreach. On LinkedIn, this usually means a connection request or DM to someone who's never heard of you.

The economics of cold outreach are unforgiving. Reply rates on truly cold messages are 1–3% on LinkedIn; book-call rates are 5–15% of replies; close rates are 5–10% of calls. The math sums to a 0.0008–0.0045% close rate per cold message. meaning 1 closed deal per 220–1,250 messages sent.

What changes those numbers is personalization at depth (specific reference to the prospect's recent post, role, or company event), tight ICP fit, and a soft ask in message one (not a calendar link). Modern best practice has shifted away from cold-at-scale toward warm outreach where the prospect has at minimum seen one or two pieces of the sender's content first.
