DM Sequence
A DM sequence is a series of LinkedIn direct messages sent to a prospect over time, typically triggered by a specific event like a comment or a profile view.
A DM sequence is the conversational equivalent of an email drip campaign. Instead of broadcasting cold outbound, the sequence reacts to a behavioral trigger. they commented on your post, opened your lead magnet, accepted your connection request. and walks them through a series of messages over days or weeks.
The mechanics: a trigger fires (e.g., post comment), the sequence opens with a contextual message that references the trigger, and follows up at varying intervals (commonly 2–3 days, then 5–7 days, then 14 days) with messages that progressively offer more value or a softer ask. The sequence ends with either a booked call, a hard pass, or a long-tail nurture loop.
What separates effective sequences from spammy ones: each message must reference real context (the comment, the lead magnet topic), the cadence must respect that LinkedIn DMs are a personal channel, and the eventual ask must match the relationship temperature. A "book a call?" on message one converts at 1–2%; the same ask on message four after value-first messages converts at 8–15%.
