Cost per Lead (CPL)
Cost per lead is the total cost to acquire one qualified lead. calculated as total spend divided by number of leads generated.
CPL = total spend ÷ number of leads. On LinkedIn, "spend" includes direct costs (LinkedIn Ads budget, tool subscriptions) and indirect costs (creator time at an hourly rate). For content-led pipelines, CPL calculation should include a time value: if 5 hours/week of writing generates 20 leads/month, and the founder values their time at $200/hour, the implicit CPL is (5 × 4 × $200) ÷ 20 = $200/lead.
CPL benchmarks vary dramatically by channel and ACV. LinkedIn ads average $75–$150 CPL for B2B content offers; organic LinkedIn for established creators runs $10–$40 CPL; cold email varies from $20 to $300+. Paid social in B2B often runs $50–$200 CPL.
CPL is a directional metric, not an absolute one. A $200 CPL looks expensive until you know the ACV is $25,000 and the close rate is 25%. then the CAC per deal is $800 and the LTV ratio is 30:1.
