Pattern Interrupt
A pattern interrupt is a LinkedIn hook technique that breaks the visual or cognitive expectation of a typical feed post - forcing the reader to stop and re-engage.
LinkedIn's feed is a stream of predictable formats: text block, headshot photo, company update. A pattern interrupt deliberately violates the format expectation in the first line or first few words to create a moment of cognitive dissonance. That friction is what stops the scroll.
Pattern interrupts work at the content level (saying something the reader didn't expect, disagrees with, or finds surprising) and at the format level (a single word or emoji as the entire first line, an unusually short opening paragraph, a counter-intuitive first sentence after a bold claim). The most effective pattern interrupts combine both.
The risk: pattern interrupts can feel manipulative or clickbait-y if the content doesn't deliver on the tension created. The best use is pairing a genuine contrarian or surprising opening with substantive content that earns the attention the hook demanded.
