LinkedIn Hook

A LinkedIn hook is the opening line of a post, designed to stop the scroll and earn the click on “see more.”

On LinkedIn, the first 150–220 characters of any post are the only thing visible in-feed before the truncation. The hook is whatever appears in that window. and it determines whether the rest of the post gets read or scrolled past.

Strong hooks share three traits: specificity (a real number, name, or claim), tension (a contradicted assumption or a stakes-laden situation), and brevity (one or two short sentences max). Generic openers like "Excited to share…" or "I've been thinking about…" reliably underperform because they communicate nothing concrete in the visible window.

Across our analysis of 44,000+ high-performing LinkedIn posts, hooks that lead with a dollar amount, a timeframe, or a counter-intuitive observation receive 2.3× more engagement than generic openings. The exact hook taxonomy varies by niche, but the underlying mechanic is universal: earn the click before you earn the read.
