Sales Qualified Lead (SQL)
A Sales Qualified Lead (SQL) is a prospect who has been vetted through a qualification conversation and confirmed to have the budget, authority, need, and timeline to become a paying client.
An SQL is a lead that has moved past marketing qualification into active sales readiness. The distinction from MQL: an MQL has shown interest through content engagement; an SQL has been personally qualified - typically via a discovery call, a detailed DM exchange, or a completed intake form - and confirmed as a real opportunity.
The SQL classification represents a commitment of real sales time. Before creating an SQL, the seller should know: does this person have a budget that matches the service? Are they the decision-maker? Is the problem clearly defined and painful enough to act on? Is there a timeline - are they buying in the next 30–90 days, or "eventually"?
For LinkedIn-driven pipelines, the SQL conversion typically happens during or immediately after a discovery call: the call reveals enough information to confirm a real fit. Well-run discovery calls convert 20–35% of SQLs to proposals within 2 weeks.
