Lead Qualification
Lead qualification is the process of determining whether a prospect has the need, authority, budget, and timeline to become a paying client - filtering leads before investing significant sales time.
Lead qualification answers: is this person worth a call? The classic B2B qualification framework is BANT: Budget (can they afford it?), Authority (are they the decision-maker?), Need (do they have the problem you solve?), Timeline (are they looking to solve it now or eventually?). Qualifying on all four before a discovery call dramatically increases close rates.
On LinkedIn, qualification happens at multiple stages: first in the DM conversation (establishing need and timeline before suggesting a call), then during the discovery call (exploring budget and authority). The DM stage is often underutilized - most salespeople try to book a call immediately rather than qualifying over a few messages, which wastes both parties' time.
The qualification mistake LinkedIn founders make most: conflating engagement (someone likes your posts) with qualified interest (someone who needs your service). A person can be a genuine fan of your content without ever becoming a client. Qualification is the process of distinguishing the two.
