Cold DM with ICP-segmented opener (no prior interaction)
Cold DM structured around the 3-part first message anatomy: specific hook → insight or observation → low-stakes question. Average reply rate for a well-executed cold opener: 12–16% vs 10.3% benchmark. Poorly executed: 5–7%.
When to use this template
When you have no prior content interaction but the prospect is high-value enough to research before sending. Spend 10 minutes on their profile, recent posts, and company before writing. The research is what makes this work - without specificity this is indistinguishable from spam.
The template
{specific_hook_from_their_profile_or_niche}.
{one_to_two_sentence_insight_or_pattern_that_connects_to_their_world}.
{single_relevant_question}?Variables
- {specific_hook_from_their_profile_or_niche}
- 10–20 words referencing something specific about them: their niche, a result they mentioned in their experience, their post series, or their positioning. Must be unique to this person - if you could send it to 100 people unchanged, rewrite it.
- {one_to_two_sentence_insight_or_pattern_that_connects_to_their_world}
- A genuine observation or pattern from your experience that's relevant to their situation. Not a pitch, not a feature list - something they'd find interesting even if they never buy anything. 20–40 words.
- {single_relevant_question}
- Easy to answer in one sentence. Avoid 'would you be open to a call', 'tell me about your business', or two-part questions. The question should feel like the natural next step in a conversation, not an application form.
Worked example
Your positioning in the leadership coaching space with a focus on mid-level managers is actually distinct from what most coaches in that niche do. There's a specific shift happening in how coaches at your level are generating inbound from LinkedIn in 2026 - less about posting frequency, more about how the positioning of the content maps to the exact person who needs a call. Worth sharing?
How to use it
- 1
Run the warm-up sequence first
A 3-touch warm-up before the DM lifts reply rate from ~10% to ~22%: (1) comment meaningfully on a recent post, (2) react to a second post, (3) view their profile. Then send the DM referencing one of those interactions. If you skip warm-up, the specificity of the message has to carry all the weight.
- 2
Score your hook before sending
Ask: could this message be sent to 100 people unchanged? If yes, rewrite the hook. The specificity test: 'Your positioning in the leadership coaching space with a focus on mid-level managers' passes. 'You work in coaching' fails.
- 3
Zero selling vocabulary in message 1
No service names, no 'I help X achieve Y', no 'I'd love to show you', no mention of your company. The anti-pattern that kills Gate 1 fastest: any message that implies the prospect would owe something by replying.
- 4
Keep it under 120 words
Messages under 200 words outperform longer formats consistently. The sweet spot is 60–100 words. If you can't fit it in 100 words, the message hasn't been edited enough.
