Warm DM after the prospect engaged with your content

First DM triggered by the prospect commenting on, liking, or viewing your profile. Expected reply rate 22–30% vs 10.3% cold benchmark. The content engagement is the hook - use it explicitly.

When to use this template

Send within 24 hours of the trigger event: prospect left a comment on your post, liked 2+ posts in one week, or viewed your profile. This is a warm opener - the prospect has already self-identified interest. If you wait more than 48 hours the moment loses its natural connection.

The template

Hey {first_name} - {specific_engagement_reference}.

{pattern_observation_relevant_to_their_situation}.

{single_low_commitment_question}?

Variables

{first_name}
First name.
{specific_engagement_reference}
Name exactly what they did: 'appreciated your comment on the [post topic] post', 'saw you liked the [topic] breakdown', 'noticed your question on the [topic] thread'. Never vague ('I saw you engaged with my content').
{pattern_observation_relevant_to_their_situation}
1–2 sentences of genuine value - a pattern you've noticed that connects to their world, not a pitch. Should be worth reading even if they never reply.
{single_low_commitment_question}
One specific, open-ended question they can answer in one sentence with zero obligation. Never ask for time, a call, or to 'learn more about their business' in message 1. The question creates a reply path without implying obligation.

Worked example

Hey Sarah - appreciated your comment on the content-to-pipeline post.

You flagged something most people miss: the problem isn't the content, it's that the content is positioned for peers, not clients. That's actually the most common pattern at your stage - you get the engagement but it comes from other consultants, not from buyers.

Curious: are the people commenting on your posts actually your ICP, or mostly other coaches in your space?

How to use it

  1. 1

    Send within 24 hours of the trigger

    Profile view + DM combo achieves 11.87% reply rate vs 4.88% for DM alone. The warm signal is most potent when fresh. If you wait 3+ days the prospect has forgotten.

  2. 2

    Name the exact engagement

    Starting with 'appreciated your comment on the [post topic] post' tells the prospect you're referencing something real. Generic ('I noticed your engagement') triggers the same skepticism as cold outreach.

  3. 3

    Add something worth reading before asking anything

    The pattern observation is where most first DMs fail - they skip straight to the question. Give something first. If they'd forward this to a colleague, the observation is good enough.

  4. 4

    One question only

    Multiple questions create decision paralysis. Research across 12,370 DMs in the database: single-question messages outperform multi-question messages by a wide margin. Make it specific to their situation, not a generic 'tell me about your business.'
