LinkedIn InMail
LinkedIn InMail is a paid messaging feature that allows users to send direct messages to LinkedIn members they are not connected with - available through LinkedIn Premium or Sales Navigator subscriptions.
InMail bypasses the connection requirement for direct messaging. Instead of needing an established connection, a Sales Navigator or Premium subscriber can send a message directly to any LinkedIn member. LinkedIn allocates InMail credits per month (typically 20–50 for Sales Navigator users), and credits are refunded when the recipient responds.
The practical position of InMail in a LinkedIn outreach strategy: it's best used for high-value, cold outreach to prospects who would not accept a blind connection request - C-suite at large companies, specific niche experts, or prospects in markets where LinkedIn penetration is high but direct connection is unlikely. The average InMail response rate is 15–25%, higher than cold email but lower than a warm DM.
The alternative for most founders: organic connection followed by warm DM typically outperforms InMail on a response-rate basis, costs nothing beyond time, and doesn't consume limited monthly credits. InMail makes economic sense primarily when volume, targeting precision, or prospect seniority makes organic connection impractical.
