Outbound Lead
An outbound lead is a prospect identified and contacted by the seller rather than one who initiated contact - generated through proactive outreach rather than inbound attraction.
Outbound leads are initiated by the seller: a cold DM, a connection request followed by a value message, a targeted InMail campaign, or a comment-driven outreach strategy. The seller identifies the prospect as a likely fit, initiates contact, and begins the qualification conversation.
Outbound lead generation on LinkedIn works differently from email or cold calling because LinkedIn provides real-time behavioral signals: someone who commented on your post, engaged with your content repeatedly, or whose profile aligns with your ICP is a warm outbound lead rather than a cold one. The distinction matters for messaging strategy - a truly cold outbound DM (no prior engagement, no shared context) converts at 8–12% reply rate; a warm outbound (they engaged with your content first) converts at 35–50%.
The outbound/inbound balance for LinkedIn founders: a strong content strategy generates inbound leads, but an active outbound process fills pipeline faster during the early months before content reach compounds. Most high-revenue LinkedIn strategies combine both: content for inbound, targeted DMs for outbound.
