Cold DM
A cold DM is a LinkedIn direct message sent to a prospect who has had no prior engagement with the sender - no content interaction, no existing connection, no shared context.
Cold DMs are the LinkedIn equivalent of cold email: they have no prior relationship to build on and succeed only when the message is highly relevant, specific, and valuable before it makes any ask. Average reply rates for cold DMs on LinkedIn range from 6–12% - far lower than warm DMs (35–55%) but still usable as a volume-based outreach channel.
The components of a cold DM that outperforms: (1) opening that names something specific and true about the prospect (their company, a post they wrote, a role change), not a generic compliment; (2) a one-sentence value proposition that speaks directly to a problem the prospect category typically has; (3) a low-friction ask (a question, a relevant resource) rather than a meeting request. Cold DMs that immediately ask for a call convert at roughly 3–5%; cold DMs that lead with value and build to the ask convert at 15–20%.
The cold DM volume ceiling: LinkedIn enforces connection and message limits to prevent spam. Personal accounts typically have a weekly limit of 100–200 connection requests (varies by account age and InMail credits). Mass cold DM campaigns risk account restrictions. The strategic trade-off: lower volume, higher targeting, higher relevance per message.
