Engagement Rate
Engagement rate is the percentage of people who saw a LinkedIn post and reacted, commented, or reshared it.
Engagement rate is calculated as (likes + comments + reshares) ÷ impressions × 100. On LinkedIn, "impressions" means the number of times the post entered someone's feed. not unique viewers. A post with 1,000 impressions and 50 total interactions has a 5% engagement rate.
Benchmarks vary by niche. From cross-account data across our managed accounts: SaaS averages 2.8%, agency 3.4%, consulting 4.1%, and personal development 5.2%. Below 1% generally indicates the post failed; 1–3% is typical; 3–5% is good; above 8% is exceptional. The top 10% of posts in most niches reach 6%+.
Engagement rate matters because LinkedIn's algorithm uses early engagement (the first 60–90 minutes) as a signal of whether to push the post to wider rings of distribution. Posts that don't clear an early threshold get throttled. This is why posting time, hook quality, and primed audience (e.g., notifying followers, comments from your team) all interact: engagement rate is downstream of all three.
