Value-First Message
A value-first message is a LinkedIn DM that leads with a useful insight, resource, or observation relevant to the recipient - delivering value before making any ask.
Value-first messaging is a sales philosophy that inverts the traditional cold outreach structure: instead of opening with who you are and what you sell, you open with something useful to the recipient. The logic: most outreach opens with a pitch, so opening with genuine value creates instant contrast and makes the sender memorable.
The practical formats: a relevant piece of your own content ("wrote a breakdown of this exact problem - want me to share it?"), a specific observation about the prospect's business ("noticed your last 3 posts were all about lead gen - wrote a thread last week that breaks down the exact funnel we use. Might be useful"), or a data point or insight the prospect doesn't have.
The key constraint: value-first only works when the value is genuinely relevant and specific to the recipient. "I thought this article about LinkedIn might be useful" is not value-first - it's generic outreach wrapped in a value-first label. The test: would this specific person, given what you know about them, actually find this valuable?
