LinkedIn Lead Magnet Playbook
How to create, promote, and optimize a lead magnet that converts LinkedIn followers into email leads.
The playbook
- 1
Pick the right format
Five formats work on LinkedIn, each with different conversion rates and production effort. PDF guide: highest perceived value, 18–25% opt-in rate, 3–5 hours to produce. Checklist: fastest to make, 25–35% opt-in rate, 1–2 hours. Template: highest perceived value-to-effort ratio for the reader, 20–30% opt-in rate. Quiz: most engaging, 30–45% opt-in rate, requires tool integration. For a first lead magnet, start with a checklist or PDF on a specific, narrow problem your ICP faces.
- 2
Solve one specific problem
The most common lead magnet mistake is being too broad. 'Ultimate LinkedIn Guide' competes with thousands of similar offers and solves nothing specific. A winning lead magnet solves one problem for one specific person in one specific situation. Write the lead magnet title as a sentence that names the ICP, the problem, and the outcome. If the title wouldn't stand out in a Google search, narrow it further.
- 3
Build the opt-in page
The opt-in page needs three things: a headline that matches the exact promise of the LinkedIn post that promoted it (no mismatch), a 2–3 bullet list of specific things the reader gets, and a single form field (email only). Every additional form field reduces conversion by 5–10%. Social proof on the opt-in page (number of downloads, named testimonials) significantly improves conversion. add it as soon as you have it.
- 4
Promote with a series of posts
One post rarely sustains lead magnet downloads. Build a launch sequence: Day 1. social proof post (show the problem your ICP has), Day 3. the lead magnet launch post (direct CTA with link in comments), Day 7. result/story post (share an early download stat or early win from a reader), Day 14. reminder post with a new hook. Each post should stand alone. don't just say 'link in bio.'
- 5
Set up a follow-up email sequence
The email that delivers the download is the most-opened email you'll ever send to a subscriber. Use it. Day 0: delivery email with download link + one sentence asking if they have questions. Day 2: a 'did you get a chance to look at it?' email that shares one specific insight from the lead magnet. Day 5: a case study or example of someone applying the thing the lead magnet teaches. Day 10: a soft CTA to book a call if they want help implementing it.
Common mistakes
- ×Building a lead magnet before confirming ICP demand. Run the launch post first; gauge interest by comments before investing in production.
- ×Mismatching the lead magnet topic to the bottom-of-funnel offer. If your service is LinkedIn strategy, a lead magnet about Facebook ads sends the wrong signal.
- ×Skipping the follow-up sequence. 70–80% of lead magnet conversions happen after email touch 2 or later.
- ×Sending the same lead magnet to every LinkedIn post. Segment: create different lead magnets for different ICP pain points, and match each post's CTA to the most relevant resource.
