The playbook

  1. 1

    Rewrite the headline

Your LinkedIn headline is the single highest-value copy on your entire profile. It appears in search results, feed comments, connection requests, and recommendations. all before anyone reads the rest of your profile. The format that works: '[What I do] for [who] → [result they care about].' Avoid job titles, generic descriptors ('entrepreneur,' 'speaker,' 'author'), and lists of skills. Replace with one clear, specific promise.

  2. 2

    Update the banner

The banner is a 1584 × 396px billboard. Most people leave it on LinkedIn's default blue gradient. Replace it with a clean image that states your value proposition in large text. One headline, your brand colors, your face or a relevant visual in the center 70% (the edges get cut on mobile). Use a free design tool (Canva has a LinkedIn banner template). Update it every 6–12 months to keep the profile feeling active.

  3. 3

    Rewrite the About section

The About section is a landing page, not a resume summary. Start with one sentence that restates the headline value proposition. Follow with 2–3 paragraphs of substantiation: who you've helped, with what results, using what approach. End with a clear call to action: DM me, link in Featured, or book a call. Use short paragraphs. no walls of text. The About section is read on mobile 60–70% of the time.

  4. 4

    Set up the Featured section

The Featured section pins up to 5 items permanently on your profile. Use it as a trust ladder: item 1 is your most credibility-building post (case study, named result, outlier post), items 2–3 are your best value-add content or a lead magnet, item 4 is your newsletter or top article, item 5 is a booking link or direct CTA. Update whenever a new post significantly outperforms. your best post deserves to be pinned.

  5. 5

Enable Creator Mode and set your topics

If you post regularly, turn on Creator Mode in LinkedIn settings. This replaces the Connect button with Follow, gives you follower count as a visible metric, unlocks LinkedIn Live and Newsletter, and lets you add up to 5 topic hashtags that appear under your name in search. Pick topics that your ICP would actually search for. not generic ones like #marketing or #business, but specific ones like #linkedinmarketing or #b2bsales.

Common mistakes

  • ×Using your job title as your headline. A stranger seeing your comment in-feed will read '"CEO at Startup X"' and feel nothing. Reframe around outcome.
  • ×Writing the About section in third person. Third person is for press releases, not for a profile that functions as a personal sales page.
  • ×Leaving the Featured section empty or with LinkedIn's default suggestions. Every empty profile element is a missed conversion opportunity.
  • ×Optimizing once and never updating. Your best post from 6 months ago should be in Featured. Your headline should reflect your current offer, not the service you launched 2 years ago.
