Shocking Hooks

Shocking hooks open with a surprising, counterintuitive, or unusual claim that breaks the reader's existing pattern of expectation.

Tips for using shocking hooks

  • 1.The shock must be substantiated in the post body. A sensational hook that leads to a generic post damages credibility.
  • 2.Counterintuitive claims outperform purely negative ones. 'I cancelled all our benefits and retention improved' is more interesting than just 'our company did something unusual.'
  • 3.Use real, specific details. Vague shock ('something surprising happened') is far weaker than specific shock ('a $40K client fired us in the best way possible').
