Track the count and use the rate as a sanity check. Arithmetic, not a measurement. Each cell divides the count in the first column by the stated impression level. It shows why a rate moves violently on a small denominator: the same 34 reactions reads as 3.5% or 1.6% depending only on how many people saw the post. Use it to translate between the two measures, never as a benchmark in its own right.

Four things that break an engagement rate comparison

The denominator changes between tools

Some tools divide by impressions and others by followers. On the same post the follower version usually reads two to four times higher. Before comparing your rate to anything, find out which denominator the benchmark used.

Impressions are private to the post owner

Anyone can count reactions and comments on any post. Nobody outside the account can see its impressions. That asymmetry is why every large public benchmark is built on counts and every rate benchmark is built on a small consenting panel.

The rate falls as the audience grows

LinkedIn shows a post to a shrinking share of a growing audience, so a rising account watches its rate decline while its count rises. Judging on rate alone can make a healthy account look like a failing one.

A small denominator inflates the rate

An account with 300 impressions and 30 reactions reports 10%, above almost every published benchmark, while reaching nobody. Counts do not have this failure mode, which is the main reason to lead with them.

How to run both measures without confusing them

    Set the target as a count

    Pick a number from the measured distribution: 12 to clear the bottom quartile, 34 to reach the median, 117 to enter the top quartile. Counts are comparable across accounts, so a target set this way survives contact with a peer set.

    Read the rate only against your own history

    Pull impressions from your own analytics, divide, and compare this month to last month on your own account. Never compare that number to a published rate unless you know its denominator.

    Watch the two move apart

    Count rising while rate falls means the audience is growing faster than distribution. Count falling while rate rises means fewer people are seeing you and the ones who do are responding. The second is the one to act on.

    A count can be verified by anyone looking at the post. A rate cannot, which invites disputes. Show the count with the quartile it sits in, and keep the rate as the internal diagnostic.

It is the only row on this page published below the standard 20-account floor, and it is marked on the page. Zero-impression rows are excluded because zero means not collected rather than nobody saw it.
