LinkedIn InMail Response Rate by Seniority

Seniority runs the wrong way in B2B outreach. Across 6,661 outbound conversations where the recipient's headline names a job level, consultants and specialists replied 49.0% of the time and managers 45.4%, while C-level contacts replied 31.1% and VPs or directors 29.5%. Founders and owners sat in the middle at 38.5%. The more senior the title, the lower the reply rate, with one exception noted below.

Computed: reply rate by job level in the recipient's headline

Job levelReply rate
Consultant or specialist49.0%
Manager or team lead45.4%
No level stated in headline42.3%
Founder or owner38.5%
C-level31.1%
VP or director29.5%

6,661 outbound-initiated conversations carrying a recipient headline, from 17 sending accounts. Reply rate: conversations in which the other person sent at least one message after our opener, divided by conversations at that level. Job level is a keyword match on the headline applied in a fixed order, so each conversation lands in exactly one row. 2,622 headlines name no level and are published rather than dropped.

What to do with an inverse seniority curve

Volume of inbound explains most of it

A VP receives more outreach in a week than a specialist receives in a quarter. The reply rate you see is the residue after their filter, so the number describes competition for attention rather than interest in your offer.

Founders answer more than the org chart predicts

Founders and owners replied 38.5% of the time across 1,488 conversations, well above C-level at 31.1%. A founder reads their own inbox. That is the single most useful line in this table for a small-ticket offer.

Depth falls faster than reply rate

C-level conversations reached three or more replies only 10.0% of the time and VP conversations 9.5%, against 19.6% for consultants. Senior contacts answer politely and stop. Plan the second message before you send the first.

Enter one level below the decision

Managers replied 45.4% of the time. A manager who owns the problem can carry the conversation upward with context you would never fit into a first message to their VP.

Recruitment is the exception

For recruitment outreach the curve inverts and senior roles outperform junior ones, which is what our InMail benchmarks page publishes. The offer decides which curve applies to your list.

Frequently asked questions

Do senior executives reply to LinkedIn messages?

Less often than everybody else. In our computed data, C-level contacts replied to a first message 31.1% of the time across 768 conversations and VPs or directors 29.5% across 410, against 49.0% for consultants and specialists and 45.4% for managers. Seniority lowers the reply rate in B2B sales outreach.

Is it easier to reach a founder or a VP on LinkedIn?

A founder. Founders and owners replied 38.5% of the time across 1,488 conversations, against 29.5% for VPs and directors across 410. Founders read their own inbox and decide alone, so the message reaches the person who can say yes.

What is a good response rate for C-level LinkedIn outreach?

6–12% is the compiled band for cold C-level InMail, with the top quartile at 16–28%. Our computed reply rate on connection-based first messages to C-level headlines is higher at 31.1%, because those messages went to existing or accepted connections rather than to strangers through a paid format.

Why do consultants and specialists reply more than executives?

They receive far less outreach and they answer their own messages. Consultants and specialists replied 49.0% of the time in our data and carried the conversation to three or more replies 19.6% of the time, roughly double the 10.0% we saw at C-level.

Should I message the manager instead of the decision maker?

Often yes for the first touch. Managers replied 45.4% of the time against 29.5% for VPs and directors. A manager who owns the problem can brief their VP with context that would never fit in a cold opener, and the thread starts warm rather than cold.

Does seniority change how long the conversation lasts?

Yes, and faster than it changes the reply rate. Conversations with C-level contacts reached three or more replies 10.0% of the time and VP conversations 9.5%, against 19.6% for consultants and 16.3% for founders. Senior contacts answer once and stop unless the second message earns the third.

Methodology

Computed on 2026-09-09 across the 10,922 LinkedIn conversations in which our side sent the first message, drawn from 100,861 messages in 14,577 conversations and 17 sending accounts.

Reply rate. Numerator: conversations in which the other person sent at least one message after our opener. Denominator: outbound-initiated conversations at that job level. The whole-cohort figure is 3,988 of 10,922, or 36.5%.

Reached 3+ replies. Numerator: conversations in which the other person sent three or more messages. Denominator: the same job-level cohort.

Job level is a keyword match on the recipient's LinkedIn headline, applied in a fixed order so founder and owner titles are captured before C-level, and C-level before VP and director. 6,661 of 10,922 conversations carry a headline. 2,622 name no level and are published as their own row.

This is an observed association inside one dataset of B2B outreach, not a controlled test. The lists differ by level: senior contacts were messaged by different accounts, about different offers, than specialists were.

InMail bands on this page are compiled. We send connection-based direct messages, not InMail, so no measured InMail figure is claimed. Every published row covers at least 16 sending accounts.
