LinkedIn InMail Response Rate by Industry
Cold B2B InMail lands between 10% and 18% in most industries, and the gap between the strongest and weakest sector is closer to two to one than ten to one. We cannot measure InMail itself, because it is a paid format for messaging non-connections and we do not send it. We can measure who answers a first LinkedIn message: across 6,661 outbound conversations where the recipient's headline names a sector, reply rates run from 35.3% to 54.6%.

6,661 outbound-initiated conversations whose recipient carried a LinkedIn headline. Reply rate: conversations in which the other person sent at least one message after our opener, divided by conversations in that sector. Reached 3+ replies: conversations in which the other person sent three or more messages. Sector is assigned by keyword match on the headline, which is coarse and puts 2,735 conversations in the unclassified row. Every row clears the floor of 8 sending accounts.

How to read an industry benchmark
The spread is two to one, not ten to one
The best computed sector answers 54.6% of first messages and the worst answers 35.3%. Changing industry moves the number less than changing the opener does, so an industry benchmark sets an expectation rather than a strategy.
A crowded inbox costs about five points
Software and technology sits at 41.1% on 1,343 conversations, below marketing at 50.6% and consulting at 48.4%. The sectors that receive the most outreach answer the least, which is the one pattern the compiled and computed tables agree on.
Reply rate and conversation depth rank differently
Healthcare answers most often at 54.6% but only 15.4% of those conversations reach three replies. Coaching and training answers slightly less often at 53.4% and reaches three replies 28.2% of the time. Pick the column that matches what you sell.
Headline classification is coarse
2,735 of 6,661 conversations fall in the unclassified row because a LinkedIn headline is free text. Treat the sector rows as directional and read the account counts before quoting a single row.
A low-rate industry is not a bad industry
Financial services carries the lowest compiled band at 8–14% and one of the highest deal values in B2B. Judge a list on replies per hour of work and on what a reply is worth, not on the reply rate alone.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average LinkedIn InMail response rate by industry?
Most industries sit between 8% and 25% for cold B2B outreach. Recruitment and staffing runs highest at 18–25%, professional services at 14–22%, software and SaaS at 9–15%, financial services at 8–14%, and government at 5–10%. These are compiled ranges consistent with the 10–18% cold B2B band on our InMail response rate benchmarks page.
Which industry replies most to LinkedIn outreach?
In our computed data, healthcare headlines replied to a first message 54.6% of the time across 130 conversations, followed by coaching and training at 53.4% and marketing at 50.6%. Software and technology, the largest sector in the set at 1,343 conversations, replied 41.1% of the time. These are connection-based direct messages, not InMail.
Why is my InMail response rate lower than the industry average?
Three usual causes. The list is drawn from a saturated sector where every prospect gets the same message, the opener carries no specific reference to the person, or the volume is high enough that personalization stopped. Industry moves the rate by roughly 19 points across our whole computed set, while the opener moves it further than that.
Does industry matter more than personalization on LinkedIn?
No. The full spread between our best and worst computed sector is 19.3 points, from 54.6% to 35.3%. On the same dataset, message length alone separates 39.1% from 21.9%. Sector sets the baseline you should expect. What you write decides where inside the band you land.
Can you measure InMail response rates from your own data?
No, and no figure on this page claims to. InMail is a paid format for messaging non-connections. Our dataset covers 100,861 connection-based direct messages, so the computed tables report reply rate on a first direct message and the InMail bands are labelled compiled.
How do recruitment outreach rates compare to sales outreach?
Recruitment runs higher. The compiled band is 18–25% for recruitment against 10–18% for cold B2B sales. Our computed table agrees in direction, with recruitment and HR headlines replying 44.7% of the time across 407 conversations, above the 35.3% unclassified baseline.
Methodology
Computed on 2026-09-09 from 100,861 LinkedIn direct messages across 14,577 conversations. The cohort is the 10,922 conversations in which our side sent the first message, from 17 sending accounts. Conversations the other person opened are excluded, because a reply rate only means something when we started.
Reply rate. Numerator: conversations in which the other person sent at least one message after our opener. Denominator: all outbound-initiated conversations in that sector. Across the whole cohort that is 3,988 of 10,922, or 36.5%.
Reached 3+ replies. Numerator: conversations in which the other person sent three or more messages. Denominator: the same sector cohort.
Sector assignment is a keyword match against the recipient's LinkedIn headline, applied in a fixed order so a headline lands in exactly one sector. 6,661 of the 10,922 conversations carry a headline. 2,735 of those match no sector keyword and are published as one unclassified row rather than being dropped.
InMail rates on this page are compiled from published benchmarks. We do not send InMail, so nothing here is presented as a measured InMail figure.
No conversation, contact, company or message text is exposed. Every row is an aggregate over at least 11 sending accounts, above our floor of 8.
